Alpenglow on the Mt. Baker from Deming, WA. This is what I see on my commute to work. Baker is a live volcano. We can occasionally see a plume of steam rising from a spot just to the right of the peak.

Mt. Baker: 9,355 feet or 2,851 meters in elevation. The two black buttes to the right of the dome erupted leaving craters. The last eruption was about 700,000 years ago. In 1975 there was an event that led to melting glaciers and snow, but did not result in magma reaching the surface. That magma has been slowly cooling since then.

I see trees of green, red roses too

I see them bloom for me and you

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies so blue and clouds of white

The bright blessed days, the dark sacred night

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky

Are also on the faces of people going by

I see friends shaking hands, saying, "how do you do?"

They're really saying, "I love you"

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow

They'll learn much more, than I'll never know

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The Matterhorn (German), Cervino (Italian) or Cervin (French), is a mountain in the Pennine Alps. With its 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high summit, lying on the border between Switzerland and Italy, it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and its 1,200 metres (3,937 ft) north face is one of the Great north faces of the Alps.

The individual pieces of the chocolate bar Toblerone are claimed by its maker Kraft to be formed in the likeness of the Matterhorn.

Zermatt (French: Praborgne) is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking section of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

It is located at the northern base of the Matterhorn in the Pennine Alps, about 10 km from the border with Italy.

Zermatt has a permanent population of around 5,500 people, although the actual population varies considerably through the seasons as tourists come and go. The village is situated at the end of Mattertal, a north-facing valley, at an altitude of 1,620m (5,315ft). The valley is a dead end; although the border with Italy is close, it cannot be crossed by road, as it traverses a glacier at an altitude of over 3,000m. Zermatt is the starting point of the Patrouille des Glaciers and the Haute Route.

The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.

The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.

The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.

Strokkur (Icelandic for "churn") is a fountain geyser in the geothermal area beside the Hvítá River in Iceland in the southwest part of the country, east of Reykjavík. It is one of Iceland's most famous geysers, erupting about every 4–8 minutes 15 – 20 m high, sometimes up to 40 m high.

Light painting in Bohinj Lake, whilst a lightning storms plays across the surrounding peaks of the Triglav National Park. The white balance is as shot - the lightning picking out the distant peaks in a curious purple glow.

Wading out to the little rocky island to light paint, whilst the thunder and lightning bounced around the surrounding hills, was a slightly nervous endeavour, but worth it for the result. I shot a few goat versions first, which I might post, then just one of the girl. Despite the break in her arm, it seemed so clean that with the storm rolling down the slopes into the valley I thought I'd call it a day.

It's a while since I've done any light painting, as the whole process just takes too long to fit around busy work loads. Using a sock as a diffuser, however, has made the process much less haphazard, and so our recent holiday gave me a chance to get back into it. Without a sock (or other diffuser) on your flashlight/torch, lens flare is a real threat, wiping out maybe 2 in 3 shots. For this shot, I'd also put the flashlight in a plastic bag. The distance is very forgiving with the lines.

If you'd like to see some of my older light paintings, just click here. There are all created in camera by drawing lines free hand with a torch/flashlight.

After about ten attempted uploads, interrupted by sporadic #badpanda messages, the file is loaded, but without EXIF data. [Update - this appears to have fixed itself].

Maybe I should have dropped the ISO - the 5D Mkiii creates some disruptive coloured noise on long exposures at 400, which I don't see at lower sensitivities - but at over ten minutes a shot, the lightning was just too uncontrolled. A sudden flurry of strikes and the sky overexposed, so smaller time windows were needed. Although the actual forks of lightning aren't especially visible, they have the neat effect of freezing the sky mostly in place.

Hope everyone is having a superb weekend. Catching up now.

Haven't been around these parts much lately, but managed a couple of images in the meantime.

The Schönburg is a castle above the medieval town of Oberwesel in the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

Schönburg Castle was first mentioned in history between the years 911 and 1166.

From the 12th century, the Dukes of Schönburg ruled over the town of Oberwesel and had also the right to levy customs on the Rhine river. The most famous was Friedrich von Schönburg - a much-feared man known as “Marshall Schomberg” - who in the 17th century served as a colonel and as a general under the King of France in France and Portugal and later also for the Prussians and for William Prince of Orange in England.

The Schönburg line died out with the last heir, the son of Friedrich of Schönburg.

The castle was burned down in 1689 by French soldiers during the Palatinate wars.

Schönburg castle remained in ruins for 200 years until it was acquired by the German-American Rhinelander family who bought the castle from the town of Oberwesel in the late 19th century, and restored it.

The town council of Oberwesel acquired the castle back from the Rhinelander family in 1950.

Since 1957 the Hüttl family have been living at the castle on a long-term lease; they operate a successful hotel and restaurant there. (Wikipedia)

Directly north of Boppard, the Rhine takes its greatest bend. This bow is called the Bopparder Hamm. The best known lookout point over this bow in the Rhine is the Vierseenblick, or “Four-Lake View”. This vista gets its name from the way in which the Rhine can be seen from here, or rather the way in which it cannot be seen: hills block out most of the view of the river itself so that visitors can only see four apparently separate patches of water, rather like four lakes. These are all actually parts of the Rhine; there are no lakes to be seen. The Vierseenblick can be reached by chairlift.

Panorama view of 5 single shots.

Boppard lies on the upper Middle Rhine, often known as the Rhine Gorge. This characteristic narrow form of valley arose from downward erosion of the Rhine’s riverbed. Since 2002, the Gorge has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A 17 km stretch of the Rhine forms the town’s eastern limit. (Wikipedia)

The Pannonian Plain is a large plain in Central Europe that remained when the Pliocene Pannonian Sea dried out. It is a geomorphological subsystem of the Alps-Himalaya system.

The river Danube divides the plain roughly in half.

The plain is divided among Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.

The plain is roughly bounded by the Carpathian mountains, the Alps, the Dinaric Alps and the Balkan mountains.

Although rain is not plentiful, it usually falls when necessary and the plain is a major agricultural area; it is sometimes said that these fields of rich loamy loess soil could feed the whole of Europe. For its early settlers, the plain offered few sources of metals or stone. Thus when archaeologists come upon objects of obsidian or chert, copper or gold, they have almost unparalleled opportunities to interpret ancient pathways of trade.

The precursor to the present plain was a shallow sea that reached its greatest extent during the Pliocene, when three to four kilometres of sediments were deposited.

The plain was named after the Pannonians, a northern Illyrian tribe. Various different peoples inhabited the plain during its history. In the first century BC, the eastern parts of the plain belonged to the Dacian state, and in the first century AD its western parts were subsumed into the Roman Empire. The Roman province named Pannonia was established in the area, and the city of Sirmium, today Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, became one of the four capital cities of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century.

This was shot over 3 or 4 nights during June-July. I only decided to make a mosaic after shooting the Lagoon and Trifid nebs and thinking it would be pretty awesome to show the whole area off as there is so much going on! Unfortunately, with the spur of the moment decision to take this on, i was left with no time to complete it before the Milky Way sank out of reach. I intended to make this a 15 panel mosaic but only managed 4! But i will be better prepared next year :)

This was a hard one to process. Its my first long exposure astro mosaic so i struggled with trying to make everything blend together seamlessly. Each panel being shot on a different night at different temperatures didn't help either. Especially one panel which i only managed 45 minutes on due to cloud ruining a lot of the frames. I had to stretch it first and then bring the rest of them up to the same point. If i had managed the same amount of exposure time on each one, i could of probably stretched a bit further!

3 panels contains 1 hour 20 minutes worth of 120 second exposures, the other 44 minutes worth, f3.2, ISO 800, calibration frames, 200mm
